Africa. . .
Gentle rain chills thin mountain air.
Golden morning-light fills the sky, glistening on waxy green leaves.
Like you, the drops tremble slightly in anticipation.

The cacophony of jungle sounds falls strangely quiet.
You shiver, crouch and wait. Scent drifts by: pungent, familiar . . .
Expectations soar.  Sound to your left,
shadows shifting behind the green canopy,
a backdrop lurching, coming to life.

The tall grasses rustle and part. Shadows become more clear.
All at once, the People of the Forest surround you.

They pause, holding back,
as if waiting for someone to make the first move.
Senses overwhelmed:
color and texture, shape and size,
the sheer number makes you dizzy
as your head fills with their scent.

Then it happens:
the Silverback appears. He struts into the clearing,
stops and surveys his pathetically camouflaged audience.
He is the king, ruling his jungle kingdom.

With menacing authority, he grunts. Nothing moves. Nothing.
The air is still, the rain suspends, you don't even breathe.
Slowly, almost dramatically, his head turns
and he looks toward you, staring in your direction.

You know he's seen you . . .
you feel him appraise you, evaluating your puny form
all hunched down in the grasses – another subservient come to
pay respects, no doubt.

He grunts again, giving the all-clear. His family moves into the glade,
one by one. A moment later, you are surrounded.

They regard you with curiosity – your muddy, soggy covering,
your smooth, flushed face, your horrible smell.

Then they continue to forage and groom,
nursing the babies, instructing the young,
securing their mates.

And patiently you wait. Bit by bit, inch by inch, they draw nearer.
Perhaps he'll want a closer look. He'll draw so near you'll see the
coarse silver coat cascading from his shoulders.
Your mind reeling, your heart pounding . . .
this alpha could snap you in two without a second thought.

No, you’re not dreaming. Yes, you are alive. Truly alive.
